JoJo Bay, Jack Tymon, Liz Kemp and Tiara Kemp formed HIghland's 2016 youth mission team, along with Allison Peeler and Rev. Billy Newton, and spent and spent one week of summer service in the neighborhoods of Chicago. It was a service, learning and faith experience to explore the Biblical call to serve and care for one another, doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly together with God.
Highland youth partnered with DOOR, a network for urban ministries in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Atlanta that hosts youth groups and young adult volunteers for service-learning experiences and discernment of faith. Learn more about Door network at www.doornetwork.org/chicago
While in Chicago, our youth mission team was challenged to consider God's call to speak life, and to do something that makes a difference in our communities and in our world.
Turkey Chop , 700 great meals served on Monday!
We met Quentin Love, who closes his restaurant every Monday, in order to serve over 700 meals to the community. Jo, Liz, Tiara and Jack spent the day in the Turkey Chop soul food restaurant on Chicago Ave. grilling chicken breasts, cooking multiple side dishes, and then serving up 700+ boxed hot lunches to anyone who could use a meal.
