Sunday morning thought/feeling: “Disabused of our illusions by much travel and travail, we awaken one day to find that the sacred center we seek is here and now, in every moment..."
Palm Sunday is the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem to come face to face with religious and political authorities of his time, which quickly leads to his arrest and execution on the cross. Palm Sunday is a day of daily choices. Read below and consider which gate you are choosing during these crazy days.
Jesus' entry into Jerusalem looks like street theater and a mockery of the way Governor Pilate and his soldiers are entering the city. Arriving for the crowded religious season, the governor would enter the city gate riding on a war horse with military troops by his side. For him, it's important to make a show of power and control. His job is to keep the status quo, Pax Romana, by intimidating and subduing the crowds. At another gate at about the same time, Jesus would be riding on a donkey with hopeful travelers by his side, making a show of humility and hosannas! At one gate, supporters are waving swords. At the other gate, supporters are waving palms. Pilate flexes muscle and strength for the Roman Empire, while Jesus demonstrates healing and peace on earth for the kingdom of God.
Our world is filled with complexities, and our lives filled with complicated decisions. And indecisions. But sometimes there is clarity between the way of haughty power and the way of walking humbly with God. Palm Sunday is a day of choices. And a reminder that we make choices everyday about walking humbly with God, open to transformation, or being subdued and kept in our place by fear and intimidation. On Palm Sunday and everyday of our lives, there are gates opening up to the way of love and mercy. As some of us wave palms, some wave swords, and some tremble with fear, let's all look and listen for those portals of love and mercy. There is always a path of love and mercy that is open to us, no matter how crazy, terrifying and intimidating the world around us may be!
